2010 September Golf Outing, Dinner & Sessions

Don't Miss the September Golf Outing, Dinner & Sessions!

Can you believe the summer is almost over, school is starting and summer sports will be ending soon? Omni and WMCPA have a special Fall "Kickoff" event for this year's dinner meetings. A number of Omni & WMCPA board members have discussed partnering on a joint project like this for the last couple of years. These two groups are the most active LUG's in the midwest and decided this event is a Winner!

During the first session we have Steve Finnes discussing IBM's strategy for Power Systems and then the second session will have Larry Bolhuis and Jim Oberholtzer explaining how to bring Cloud Computing to your IBM i. These sessions should appeal to the CIO and the techie from your company. Make plans to take part in this day of Golf and education today! The details of both sessions are below.

We have worked with Lake Lawn Resort to get a special deal on a day of Golf and Dinner. The cost is unbelieveable! If you want to play golf, attend the dinner and meeting it will cost you $75.00.   I don't know much about golf but for $75.00, I would figure you'd have to walk the course. Not at Lake Lawn...this includes the golf cart! If you want to attend only the dinner meeting the cost is $40.00.

SPONSORS: In addition to joining us for a fun day on the greens, we are looking for sponsors to donate prizes for a raffle, bag stuffers, or sponsor holes on the course.  Prizes will be raffled prior to our dinner meeting.  For a $150 donation, your company will be hosting a contest on a hole that rewards the golfer with a $100 gift certificate.  Your company name and logo will be displayed at the hole.  For a $75 donation, your company name and logo will be displayed at the hole with no contest.  WMCPA and OMNI will post sponsor's logos, and links on our web sites.

REGISTER now to sponsor a hole!

Session II - 7:00 - 8:00 PM

Larry Bolhuis & Jim Oberholtzer

iDevCloud – Cloud computing on your IBM i

Want to get into Cloud computing with your IBM i?  Larry Bolhuis and Jim Oberholtzer, both IBM Certified Professionals lead you through the process.  Creators of iDevCloud, Larry and Jim have a unique perspective on the process of constructing a cloud from building the hardware, understanding the IBM licensed software maze, and putting together an offering to the public.  While others have put an IBM i machine on the internet, Larry and Jim conceived of a way were individual developers could buy monthly access to a complete system, with all the software toys, at IBM i versions V5R4, V6, or V7.  Here how the pricing model was built, and how Frankie V was converted to a multi-user, mulch-purpose system.  Attendees will learn:

  • How to set up the infrastructure, LAN/WAN and IBM Hardware
  • How to set up the security for a multi-user system where each developer has their own little slice of the system
  • How to build the business model to make it work.

Bio - Larry Bolhuis has grown up with computers since his father began repairing them in 1967. He has a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, and began working on IBM’s finest equipment with the S/34 and S/36 in 1984. Larry began work on the AS/400 immediately following its introduction in 1988, has held more than thirty IBM System i family Certifications, and was the first in North America to earn the Certified Advanced Technical Expert – System i certification. Since 1997 he has contributed as an author for many certification tests. Larry has extensive experience with partitioning, the Hardware Management Console, system design, configuration, migration, and administration. Larry also has significant networking experience most recently with Ethernet and wireless networks, and TCP/IP. Larry also works on routers, firewalls, switches, load balancing equipment and works with Internet connectivity and security. Larry has won Gold, Silver, and Bronze medals at COMMON as well as it’s highest honor, the Distinguished Service Award. He speaks frequently at users groups around North America.  Larry is the Chief i-entist and owner of Frankeni Technology Consulting, LLC in Middleville , MI.

Bio - Jim Oberholtzer started his career in 1980 working in positions of increasing responsibility including Vice President – Technology, at the United States Bowling Congress (USBC).    Today, Jim owns Agile Technology Architects, LLC a consulting firm that assists companies in the implementation and maintenance of an Agile/SCRUM development environment.  Additionally Agile provides implementation design and support for Agile infrastructure in order to support the applications Agile companies need to grow and thrive.

Recognized by IBM as a Subject Matter Expert in Power Systems, server design, administration, and operations, Jim is a member of the panel of SMEs that create many of the IBM certification tests for the System i.  Jim also holds a Masters, Software Engineering from Carroll University in Waukesha Wisconsin.
